VOICES: Barbados Writers’ Collective

VOICES: Barbados Writers’ Collective (my literary home but now defunct unfortunately) emerged out of a group of Barbadian writers sharing their work at a little cafe in Dalkeith Road, to celebrate Barbados’ anniversary of Independence. It became one of the 1st forums where writers were paid to be featured.

Founder (the right irie) Nailah Folami Imoja was the 1st Co-ordinator and the “talking stick” was passed down and down and down.

VOICES Co-ordinators:

  • Nailah Imoja (Founder)
  • Sandra Sealy
  • Katy Gash
  • Latisha Greaves
  • Stacia Burrowes
  • Debbie Callender.

This group was a creative hub for encouragement, open mic (refreshments!) and an avenue for growth.

Run voluntarily with goodwill, periodic sponsorship and donations, meetings were held the last Friday of every month at the Barbados Museum & Historical Society at 7:30 p.m. Visiting writers and those who appreciate literature of all kinds were welcomed.

Readings with features were scheduled and new writers emerged at Open Mic, where you could meet Bajan writers online
