BBC Writers Room (UK)

The BBC Writers Room ” is the first point of call at the BBC for all unsolicited scripts and writers. All work is assessed primarily for the talent of the writer, and in addition for the script’s suitability for further development.”

They are seeking “full unsolicited scripts (or episodes) for film, TV drama, radio drama, Children’s Drama, TV and Radio sitcom, and short film. Also stage plays, but only as a calling card for a writer’s talent.”

They DO NOT WANT: “Spec scripts for existing shows” – only youroriginal work OR script samples, short stories, novels, sketches, or ideas/treatments for programmes.  

DO NOT SEND SCRIPTS BY EMAIL: They don’t have the resources to print them or assess them on screen.

POUI Summer Writing Workshop (Barbados)

Poui: Cave Hill Journal of Creative Writing of the Cave Hill Campus of the University of the West Indies, announces its first summer intensive workshop.  This practical, hands-on writing workshop led by Antiguan novelist, Marie-Elena John, is aimed at writers with some prior experience who may be thinking about publication.

It is sponsored by the Cave Hill Campus Visiting Lecturer Series and the Central Bank of Barbados.

VENUE: Cave Hill Campus, Barbados

DATE: Monday, June 22nd – Friday, June 26th 2009

TIME: 10:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. and 2:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m.

At the heavily subsidized fee of BDS$250.00 or US$125.00

To pre-register,send by attachment, a 5 page sample of your writing via email.  You can request a registration form via email.

Submissions should be sent to to kerry.lucas@cavehill.uwi.edu  (May 4th-31st) and/or  angela.trotman@cavehill.uwi.edu 

 If accepted, the fee must be paid in full by Friday, June 12.  Maximum number of participants is 12

Working Mother Magazine is targetted towards “full-time, part-time and sidelined moms who work at public and private companies of all types and sizes; who are entrepreneurs; and who are self-employed.”  

Please pitch queries/ideas to the correct editors listed on the site.

Queries can be emailed or snail-mailed. If possible, please include clips of your previously published work. Of course include all contact info so we can reach you if we need to. If pitching about a specific working mom, include recent photographs/jpegs (at least 300 dpi) if possible.

Unsolicited manuscripts will not be returned.

The Pedestal Magazine (USA)

The Pedestal Magazine is an online literary magazine aiming to “support both established and burgeoning writers…[and] are committed to promoting diversity”.  This is a paying market with rates.They are seeking poetry ($40 per poem), book reviews ($0.02 per word), fiction($0.08 per word) and flash fiction($0.05 per word).

They are also “currently accepting submissions of slam, spoken word, poetry with music, and performance poetry. For this category, we are not interested in “straight” readings of poems. If interested, please send one (1) sample piece as an attachment in mp3 format to pedmagazine@carolina.rr.com. Please keep in mind that all mp3 files must be no larger than 7mb.”  Spoken word and slam submissions can be previously published and/or previously recorded.

No previously published work will be accepted but they do accept simultaneous submissions.  They also have blacked out dates when submissions  are not to be sent.

The Dabbling Mum is a free, online magazine for BUSY parents and those who just want to learn more about working from home, running a small business, writing for the web, writing for print, Christian parenting, cooking, and more.

Although they are currently seeking writers to donate articles, there are (low rate) paying opps. that must be queried according to their writers’ guidelines and editorial calendar online.
